Following the trend that Squarenothing has improved upon and perfected, this thread is dedicated to our own Marios. Marios if possible would you answer our questions here?
Here are some questions that I wanted to ask for a while now:
- How has your personal life been affected by your perticipation in the bands you're currently and formely were in? [Job, family and so on...you don't have to answer if this is a bit too personal]
- No one else says anything about this, but do you know if there's a chance you might be comming to the States?
thanks bro

Hi Frost
I can tell you that it was pretty hard for me to left my country and my family/Friends in order to realise the Nightrage vision.
My life change a lot here, new friends, new place, new culture, but still i`m enjoying the fruits of what i have harvested with the band, Nightrage is all i have in my life and Iīm willing to keep that way. All in the name of metal.
Thereīs a chance for us to be in the States after the new album has been released, that would be totally awesome to play for all our fans there.
Cheers.

Thanks for the answers man, here's a few more:
How often do you practice on guitar? Do you ever do scales or any other warmups?
I need help with something. I want to buy a flying V but I'm not sure which one...If I were you, which one would you pick and why?
Gibson V
Jackson King V
Jackson Rhoads
Dean V
I hope you can help, \m/

Iīm practicing quite often but itīs mostly when i feel ispired to play or write some new stuff for the band.
I play scales and everything in between, mostly i like to play some chords on my 12 string electro acoustic Takamine, to get more inspiration.
I like to play some warming up exercises too before i begin to play the stuff that i have in my mind.
I would choose the Gibson V becuase they are the best guitars in the world.
Cheers.

-Are into any of the relatively "new" bands like Behemoth, Nile, Mnemic, Shadows Fall or are you more into "old school" metal?

I'm sorry but I have to ask a personal question. You are one of my favorite guitarists. What tuning do you use most of the time just to get an idea of what you like to shred.

Thanx for your nice words Nightrageous.
We are tuned two steps lower all the guitar strings, so if the normal tuning is E A D G B E we are tuned to C F A# D# G C, and that gives more heavier and darker sound on our guitar/Bass mayhem.
Also donīt forget that Iīm using very thick strings on my guitar 011 016 024 036 046 066, so we donīt loose any power and clarity on my sound. Be aware as well that you need EMG- 81 pickups.
Cheers.
Marios.
www.nightrage.com
I've been thinking about buying some EMGs for my guitar, but first I need to get it all fixed up, and I also need to buy a new amp. Right now I have (I think) .12's on it, and I am tuned somewhere close to C... but then again, the strings on it are 2 years old, and most likely very stretched out. :)
i have a very dumb question, but as i see it here and in every tab on pages like ultimate guitar, metaltabs and so on the normal tuning is "E A D G B E". since i am from germany we call that B "H". and our "B" is you "Bb". does anyone know if there is any other language that has this B/H thing as in german? i suspect that our German has it's little exceptions and bonusses :o (also like that thing with million, billion...)

marios...i just want to say THANK-YOU for making yet another masterpiece. both SV and DIC are music to my ears. DIC blew my fucking head off just like i expected it to do!!! i've never looked forward for a record to come out as much as DIC and its everything i expected it to be and then some!!! on SV theres a few tracks with tom from evergrey doing clean vocals and on frozen from DIC theres one clean vocal track from mikael from dark tranquillity. what made you decide to have only one track on DIC to have one clean vocal track as opposed to SV having a few tracks having clean vocals?? and did you origianlly want tom to do the track on DIC or did you want someone new like mikeal??
thanks again man for making kick ass music. you have no idea how much it stokes me out!!
bottoms up!!!!

Hi Descented into chaos.
We didnīt have so many clean vocals this time around.
We thought it would be cool to have Mikael as a guest on the new album.
Mikael found the idea exciting so he came by the studio to do the job.
There were no plans to have Tom back in the fold.
Thanx for your nice words.

I got one more. We all have a good idea of your musical influences, now we know you play a 12 string as another inspiration tool, which raises my last question what other things musical or not inspires you to pick up your axe? (video games, movies, dreams, what not)

Well...I'm a German Nightrage-Fan, too, and I love the stuff of Exhumation and At The Gates(R.I.P.), too(Of course, you can't really compare these bands). Got a little question to marios, though I think, every german fan would post it. :) :
Do you plan to play some gigs in Germany. I'd be there, standing in the first line, banging my head off. It's not only, that I like the music you write, but I think you're a really "good" person, marios. Nothing too personal, but I like the way, you answer personal questions. Sounds kinda funny now, but when I read all this stuff, I knew, it came from your heart. Well, hang on, and try to keep the current Line Up, because you rule!
PS: Sorry, if my English ins't that good :)
EDIT: Another question just hit my brain: Where can I find nightrage tabs? I want to play your stuff, it would be great. :D
Marios
02-02-2005, 03:03 PM
Hi Sub
and Thanx for your nice words and the interest in the band.
We are planning to play at a European tour at June nothing confirmed yet.
Thereīs no Nightrage tabs at the moment, i guess itīs just a matter of time.
Cheers.
Marios.
www.nightrage.com
Well, here's another one from me:
Don't know, if It's too personal, but I think, the lyrics on Descent Into Chaos are different than the lyrics on Sweet Vengeance. They seem a little harder to see through. The lyrics on Sweet Vengeance were kind of direct, which was good, too, because I found them very emotional in that kind of way. How would you describe a change of the lyrics and is there anything you could tell us about your lyrics, for example, what you're feeling when you write them(well you can tell a lot of your emotions by the lyrics, but that's still an interesting thing :) )?
Marios
03-20-2005, 08:55 AM
Hi Sub
The lyrics this time are more diverse and they have to do with the fact that we as human beings we are descent to our own end, to our own chaos. We are lead to nothingness with our behaviour, and I think that only cold feelings is what we share and what we give every day to each other, but we have to try to do something for that, we have to find ourselves again from all this chaos, we have to resist and fight to make this world better, we have to treat each other with respect and try to be much better human beings.
In some other songs Im talking of how at the end of the day, after a lot of hardship, we have the ability to fulfil the dreams of a lifetime, the fact that we have to stay true to ourselves, and fight to stay human in such a cruel world we living in.
Take care.
Marios.
www.nightrage.com
You're absolutely right, that's what I think, too. Mankind has lost it's true goals out of sight and is only being selfish. Only few really care, what happens to our society and to our whole race. I think, the fight for our survival is getting tougher and tougher, and if we go on like this, we'll cease to exist in an early future.
"As we descent into chaos, through the pain of a thousand lifetimes,
what have we learned?"
Nothing!

hey marios,
First heard of you from the swedish appocolypse gig in london back in december... and i really wish i knew how good of a band you were before i went.
I have started tabbing some songs, using a program called powertabs (a tablature making program, very good), so far i have tabbed descent into chaos and half way through phantasma. have you ever thought about opening a tablature section?
Really great riffs in the new album though, alot of power and energy going into the music and its all magnified by tomas's vocals. Thnx for producing such great inspiring music...
p.s. any idea when lyrics will be put up on the site?
Marios
03-22-2005, 09:20 PM
Hi Metatron
and Thanx for your interest in the band.
You can send me your tablatures and i can post them online.
The lyrics are on the booklet of the CD.
We are not going to have them online right now maybe later this year.

I believe somebody has already said something about the lyrics to Descent Into Chaos and they are without doubt indicative of what a pitiful bunch we are as a whole.
In any event i couldn't help but get the impression that the instrumental track, Solus, is an uplifting track which tries to reinforce a sense of hope amid the cold and cruel world we have to face day in day out. That's what i think anyway. Marios touched on it when speaking about the lyrics and i got that impression by listening to Solus; a great track i might add.

Hey Marios,
First I'd like to thank you for contributing so much to the Melodic Death Metal scene, your music has been a big influence to me.
Secondly, I was wondering if any of your lyrics had any religious influence in them. I've noticed you wear a cross in the majority of the Nightrage pictures and was curious to know if any of your religious beliefs (if you indeed hold any) make there way into your music? The lyrics to the chorus in "Hero" come immediatly to mind.
i think it's because he's greek. greek people are for me pretty much religious. at least this is my connotation.
i've asked this before in the Gus thread... but maybe you can answer faster :P :
who is the girl in the DIC booklet (she is shown on photos)?

Hello Marios
I'm a metalhead from your homeland...Hail there and congratulations for your great achivements...
Though young,I'm fed up with this Shity situation here in Greece...
Metalheads don't have a good time here and musicians can't express themselves through the metal way....
I really think of taking you as example and leave for Sweeden in a couple of years...what do you propose and suggest?
I'm sure it's gonna be one of the toughest situations I've ever been...but Even if i do not manage to do anything in music...I wanna live this shithole
Descent into chaos rules and your interview at RashRock was amazing...

I think that we used 4x12 cabinets on the shoot dont really know what kind.
Also the melodies tone comes from the hands really, I dont really know what kind of sound Jacob used for the lead tone it was actually sounded good, I record with a podxt first and then he re-amped the led tone through a Marshall head.

Hey Marios!
Awesome job on the new CD! I'm hoping to hear more great music from Nightrage in the future!
I just have a few questions to ask you.
1. What amps did you use in the recording of A New Disease is Born? You said in a earlier post that you used Randall, Peavey, and Engl amps but what were the specific models? Also, what amp model of those did you use for the song Scathing?
2. What brand and model of speaker cabinets do you use? Also, what brand and model of speaker cabinet do you use that you find having the best sound?
3. Are you coming to Alberta anytime in the future? I missed the In Flames concert in Edmonton and there hasn't been a decent metal concert worth going to since! I'd love to have you guys come to Calgary sometime! Maybe I should move to Europe where all the awesome metal bands perform more often...
Thanks!

Hi there
and Thanx for your interest in NR.
Regarding your questions about the amps we have used Peavey 5150 and Mesa boogie rectifier for the rhythm guitars and Marshall for the guitar leads.
About the cabinets I dont remember what we actually used for that album.
Scathing played with the same amps. actually I record all the guitars with PODXT and then Jacob reamped them with the above mentioned amps.
We would like to play in Canada pretty soon, we have a big fanbase there and we want to make a lot of shows there.

Peavey 5150 for rhythm.

Marshall Valvestate 8100 for leads
Marshall 4x12" 1960A cab.

Well any small amp can do a good job with a metal zone pedal from boss.
Practice, practice, practice.
Thatīs the only way to make a good sound.
Cheers.

Hey!
I just got my new Boss Metal Zone pedal! Any recommendations on settings I should use on it to make a good sound? Preferably something good for playing melodic death metal (Nightrage, In Flames, Arch Enemy, etc.)
Thanks!

Hey there
Level on the pedal must be the same like your clean guitar sound, High amd low itīs up to you usually try first the treble and then the low, you need also middle in your sound experiment there, and dont put too much distortion, as it can destroy your sound.
Hope that helps.

Hey man,
I was thinking of purchasing a Podxt with the metal shop pack because it includes some good amp models in there like the 5150 and the Engl Powerball. Would it be worth buying it for those models (Do they sound as good as the real amp head?) or would it be better to stick with the metal zone pedal I have until I can purchase the actual amp heads?
Thanks!
Marios
08-27-2007, 09:16 AM
Hey man
The PODXT itīs really good for recordings of your songs.
Stick to the metal zone until you buy a real cool amp, I would recommend the Randall V2 that I play and iīm an endorser, itīs a really cool amp with amazing distortion and super cool clean sound.

Hey,
I noticed that nobody's made a post here since late August so I guess I'll make a post in hope to spark the interrogation again (If you don't mind). That's what the thread is for isn't it?
Anyways, back on track...to the question!
If one was interested in trying to get into a metal group in some place like Sweden or another European country, what would be a good and effective approach in finding people to be part of your band? Like how did you find people in the first place to fill the required slots for Nightrage when the group was first becoming a full band? You seem to lose band members like Jimmie or Constantine but then so quickly afterwards there are already people filling their positions. How do you do it?
Thanks man!
Eric.

The first 2 albums also i think they are special to me and mostly the first one Sweet vengeance, I had to work like crazy for that album and I have put so much energy and passion behind it.
The melodies we had on the first album were really sweet and I wanted to make the perfect balance between melody and agressive riffing.
All that I have been through inspired me to write those songs man.

marios did u go home to greece?
im listneing to HERO - i think this is the best example of the aggressive riffing style that makes sweet vengeance so untouchable. marios what is this song about??
Marios
12-29-2007, 10:26 AM
Hey man
Happy holidays, still in Sweden spending time with my girl.
Hero is one of my favorite songs too.
We are dealing about the emptiness of the human existence, the lyrical concept it has to do with personal matters as well, of things that I faced in the past and they really affect my personal life. I want to take my vengeance to these people that they backstab me and try to put me down. I want to scream at them how miserable they were, and how wrong they were with me. Its a trip to the inner and bitter emotions of a man that he was hurt by his past. He is trying to find if there is any light at the end of the tunnel, he wants to leave all the shit behind him and move forward to find the peace in his heart. This is the long ride of this man, its a lonely ride, and I think some people can feel related to situations like that. I want to say to the people outside there that you guys be careful life is hard, believe in your selves and your dreams, and dont let anybody to put you down, if you really follow your heart, you are able to achieve any goal in your life, so after all at the end the message and meaning of the album its positive, is there any light at the end of the tunnel? you have to search it for your self..
Be well.

marios wtf? Jimmy left the band? I went to blabbermouth today and all of the sudden I see an interview with the new nightrage singer. did i miss the news story or press release? why did jimmy leave?
well now that he left i guess i can tell you that he sucked!!!!hahahaha sorry if that offends you man but shit, he really brought that last album down dude. well he didnt "suck" but his voice was just too "core" for a band like nightrage. there was nothing distinctive in it really. i mean tompa has that brutal edge in his delivery that makes him the best vocalist ever. jimmy sounded like 1000 other guys out there..nothing special. a singer like Tompa is the best for nightrage - I havent heard the new guy yet but I hope he is absolutely fucking brutal and the next album has more songs like the tremor which is just fucking unstoppable and less clean vocals.
uneasy_conscience
01-31-2008, 11:39 PM
sorry marios im sure you chose jimmy because you liked what he brought to the band i hope i didnt offend you. its your band. but as a fan that is my opinion. nightrage is at its best when it is the absolute most brutal it can be. you guys shit on all other bands when you put out albums like sweet vengeance. it's melodic as hell and the riffing is just brutal and the ass kicking drums and production really propel the album. it's one of the best ever i hope you push nightrage to the most extreme limits of brutality on the next album.

fuck man saying the next album is going to be the best one yet seems like a stretch. sweet vengeance is one of the best death metal albums ever and surely it can not be topped even by nightrage?!?! i say that with all the hopes and prayers that it is at least on par with sweet vengeance. i think it has the best production as well. it's sooo fucking BRUTAL. The Tremor is the most brutal of them all and the fucking best song. Tompa's best performance I think.
Shit have you guys heard the new Hate Eternal album? Fucking awesome brutal as all hell death metal. Possibly the most fucking crushing album to come out this year along with Decrepit Birth.
Erik Rutan is a death metal god.
I am glad to hear the new nightrage will have no gay "core" elements or clean vocals. Nightrage is best when it's at it's most brutal!!!!!!!!
shit Marios did u hear the new Firewind? I want Gus to be back in a death metal band. I am not too big on the newer Firewind although Forged by Fire is one of my favorite albums because of the kick ass riffs and Chitty is an amazing vocalist! the new firewind isnt all that great IMO.....

The lyrics of Nightrage are very personal and deep, we are dealing about the emptiness of the human existence. Its a trip to the inner and bitter emotions of a lonely man that he has been through a lot of hardship in his life. He is searching if there is a light at the end of the tunnel, is it death or salvation? Its a lonely road and its filled with thorns, but you have to bleed to discover the truth. Some people they have to look deep inside themselves and realise their own big faults.
Thats pretty much the lyrics behind sweet vengeance and its pretty much a concept when it comes to the lyrics.

Hey Marios clean vocals are a good thing, just not that metalcore kind :)
Anyway I have lots of things to get off my chest!
First thing..
I think its cool as hell you actually make time to discuss Nightrage with your fans, not every musician does that.
Second thing..
Hows the new vocalist? He seems pretty kick ass and definitely the man to take on the throat duties ONCE AND FOR ALL. It sucks to see one of the best modern melodic death metal bands go through multiple vocalists. From the interviews of this guy, and the new live stuff you posted on the site I think NR finally hit the jack pot. Sounds like he really is dedicated to vocals for NR, and he was damn good live.
Thrid thing...
NR is already in the process of writing a 4th album? :viking:
Last thing...
I need to fucking go to bed....

Hello Marios,
I've read that Jesper Stromblad from In Flames performed a guest solo on "Images of Our Extinction" by Exhumation.
Do you still get on well with him or the other members of In Flames?
Would you like to work with him again?
and an interresting one, what do you think about the evolution of the band and the upcoming album?
I love this band and I love the evolution, I think it's good that a band doesn't keep on releasing the same thing, If they have said all they wanted to say with "The Jester Race" or "Colony" and "Clayman" in pure melodic death metal, I am glad they have explored other ways to put their music on a higher level^^
they have always created, they don't follow...In the end they are always In Flames! I respect them.
other things, you've made guest solo appearances for Dragonland and Olof is now a member of NR
How did you know him?
You also helped The Forsaken out on tour as bass player, how was it? how did you know hem?
well that's enough question I guess :)

In Flames used to be a killer band and then they decided to write happy jump up and down metal and they "switched the melody from the guitar to the vocals" (-anders friden). Please keep thing brutal with Nightrage and don't go down the path In Flames took!!! theyve lost all respect from their early fans!

did I say anything about the Nightrage's sound?
I don't think so...
if you've read my firts posts you had learned I am a truly fan of Descent Into Chaos and Sweet Vengeance
my respect for In Flames is my opinion and that doesn't mean that I want Nightrage to be like them...
I have just explain my opinion about the evolution of the band, I respect them because it is the first band that had made me love music like I do today ! If you talk about early fans who spit at them because they have the courage to evolve when other bands keep on doing the same things again and again...I don't care!!! Sorry for them...
Do you know Dimension Zero? The new album is a killer one, heavy and brutal, straight in the face, and Jesper Stromblad is the main songwritter, so Stromblad is still a genius whatever everybody says! there is no shame to work with him you know ;)
so where is the problem???
Man, don't talk too quickly and don't interpret things you finally haven't understood...I prefer explain my opinion in order not to have any other misunderstandings in the future
I love Nightrage and I trust Marios, I want the most brutal, melodic and heaviest slap in the face they can give:)

Are you going to be using the Randall V2 in the recording of the next album? It would be cool if you were.
Also, I was looking at the line of amps from Randall that included the Randall G3 RG 100 combo. Have you had any experience with this amp? I'm a bit short on free spending cash right now to afford a Randall V2 and a cab to go with it but I've heard that this is also a good amp. Any help would be great!
Keep it real man!
Eric.

Hey there
yeah every Randall amp owns man.
U should go for it.
I will record the next album with the V2 its my favorite amp and it has amazing distortion.
Metal on.

thats a lot of songs hahaha
but marios will choose the songs he's gotten the most questions on first. then maybe later we can do some fan favorites.
one thing i know from watching him play so much; he plays the guitar like a drummer. lol ive never seen anyone hit the strings as hard as he does.

Hey, this is a question for Marios,
I made a stop by the guitar store today and I am really interested in the ESP Eclipse. The sales guy there told me that if I was going to play in tunings like C standard I would have to get things like the neck adjusted, the nut indents grooved in further, etc. Did you have to get these kinds of things done? Also, if I do get that done for C Standard, how far will I be able to stretch to other tunings near it without wrecking the neck?
Thanks a bunch man!
Eric.

Hey man
it all depends of the gauge of the strings that u are going to have on the guitar.
Give it to a good techinician and he will fix it for u.
Cheers.

Hey it's me again,
You stated some time ago that you did your recordings with the PodXT and then reamped that recording. What exactly do you mean by that? Do you mean that you recorded the guitar with a clean sound on the Pod and then used the distortion from the amp like an addon or did you do it a different way?
When you recorded the recent album with Peavey 5150 and Dual Rectifiers for rhythm, which amp was more focused on? Also, did you use one of the two for different songs or did every song use both of them together?
Thanks man!
Marios

Yeah man
I reamp the signal from pod , its very usual i studios now.
About amps Jacob know how he did it sorry hahahahha.
Thanx for the interest.
Cheers.

Sorry man I ask so many questions but I always am interested in knowing more.
I noticed that you use .011 - .068 gauge strings. I understand that the thick low can hold notes very well but how effective are .011s in C Standard tuning? I currently use .010s and my high strings always go out of tune when I do a lot of serious bending, pulling, whatever. Do you find issues like these when you shred with .011s? Would locking tuners help with keeping the strings in tune after brutal playing?
Thanks a bunch man!
Oh yeah, would a .054 on the 6th string be thick enough to hold notes as low as A# in tune?
Marios
05-23-2008, 06:26 PM
Hey man
always have thicker strings otherwise u will have a lot of tuning problems.
The 11th set could be ok it depends always how hard u play.
Cheers.

Marios, a question: The sound in the first seven seconds or so of "Scathing"...how is it produced? My friend wants to learn it on guitar, but we're not sure how. In fact, tabs of the song begin after that first part. Thanks for your time, Marios.
Marios
07-15-2008, 10:29 AM
hey man
I dont have this beggining on Scathing on tab.
But its a B minor chord if that helps, and i i change the bass notes from B to A to G to E, and also the rhythm its change the bass notes on upbeat/upstrokes.
Cheers

Hi there, just a quick question about clean vocals on the new album. I loved them on the last one will they be returning and to what extent?
Cheers for your time.
Marios

hey man
No clean vocals this time, more brutality and heaviness, maybe some old school shit we can throw in some parts but not alike the last album.
Cheers.

YEAH !!!!
Is the writting process going well?
I have to say that Nightrage is one of the last bands to play some REAL melodic death metal and not some pop-melodeath like it's called nowadays.
I can't stand those bands full of clean vox on choruses or melodic keyboards instead of lead guitars that are the trademark of melodic death metal.
We are waiting for you guys !!!I'm sure it will be great !!

I agree with you. Most of those bands are in it for money. We do this for love of melo death. the real way.
We have a few ideas for clean, but they will be more along the lines of the first album. Like marios said it will sound nothing like the last album in terms of vocals.

Tom Englund is one of the best clean vocals singer in all kind of stuff to my mind. I love his way to sing like on "Recreation day" and his way to sing on "Sweet Vengeance" was part of the charm of this album...and you are not so far away I think ;)
So, don't worry ;) you're doing very well :D
