I have recently (last spring) finished upper secondary school (or whatever it is called), and I'm currently practising at a local school as I'm waiting to get to the military (We all have to make sacrifices). After six months of playing a nazi, I'm going to an university to study mathematics, but I don't know what I'm really going to be when I'm big.

:) well, we're not short on teachers and mathemeticians here are we? :)
moloturpa - what did you study?
WanKKa - and what are you studying?
Baldur Vulgo - it won't be boring once you start teaching. You will have your hands full then, so drink up and enjoy the peace now ;)
Big J Q - military service.......oh, I bet you you can't contain your excitement waiting for that. :/ Don't they have 2 other options to military service over there - civil service or jail? ;)
So when do you have to do this? What if you're already in university when it's supposed to be time for military service? Will they let you skip it if you are studying or do they make you put your studies on hold?
Pakana - what do you want to do once you're done with your studies?
TrollhorN - no - not sick at all. :) I just hope that those kids realise just how VITUN fortunate they are.
I am a Human Resources manager for a sheet metal fabrication / Roofing contractor company. In addition to hiring and training people, I'm also the company nurse, shoulder to cry on, counsellor, hand-holder. and it's never a dull moment. But I enjoy it because I enjoy helping people. :) I studied Commercial Art at university.

was it senior high school or whatever, i think i am heading towards history studies tho...

Actually I have already gotten into university, and yes, they do let us skip at least an year because of the military service. However, I have to get over the military in 6 months, otherwise I may have to waste a year and try again next year. (I could start studying even while I would still have to be in army; It's just that I would miss the basic courses and things would get tricky, I imagine.
In addition to civil service and jail, I *think* there's an possibility for armless service... Or is that the same as the civil service? Then if you have disabilities (like missing legs, bad eyes etc.) you have a chance they give you your freedom -> NO ARMY AT ALL! However, I wouldn't want to lose parts of my body just for the army.

10-30-2001, 09:13 PM
I was wondering if they let you skip army service all together if you are in university. Apparently not :(
What if you are mentally unstable - will they exempt you for that? That's a potential option. ;)
Big J Q
10-31-2001, 12:23 PM
Mental unstability IS grounds for skipping the army completely, however I wouldn't want to be consider as a madman by employers & other people. (Obviously I'm quite mad, but not a psycho ;) )

After I'm done with my studies (ohh, I can see that happening, for sure... ) I'm supposed to be a teacher. Rough. ;)
Then to the military subject. The Finnish goverment is so damn neurotic about the army that it hardly lets anyone skip it entirely.... surely not because of studies or work, oh no, never.

Yes, they seem to take great pleasure in ruining the course of life of thousands of finnish men. (or soon-to-be men) ;)
"Oh, you'd like to get on with life and perhaps with your studies? Well, in that case, there's a 6 week suicide-camp waiting for you! But don't worry, we'll let you out when it's too late."

"Oh, so you have a wife and three kids to feed. In that case we'll have to take you in for 12 months. But worry not, you'll get 19 marks each day to feed your children with."

"WanKKa - and what are you studying?"

Big JQ - an employer cannot ask questions about those things so no need to worry. Nor can they ask your race, religion, sex, marital status or anything like that.
Pakana - you are gonna be a teacher? You are brave to take that on. What grade level do you want to teach?
I think that ANYONE who takes on teaching has courage.

Metal gives me strength. :D I'm studying to become a teacher of maths and physics (evidently also of some computer shite) and the grade levels ought to be the upper classes of elementary school (7th-9th) and the entire high school, possibly also containing some adult supervision. :) We'll see.

I am very glad that you won't be teaching in a USA school.......
Teaching that grade level here would break your spirit in the first week. It does most teachers. People here seem to overlook manners when raising their children, you see.
How much longer do you have until you finish university?
Pakana
11-03-2001, 02:23 PM
The problem is the same here as well, fortunately just in a different scale - at least for now. Anyway my spirit is way too strong for some ill-tempered brats.
It's my 2nd year of the studies now and they say it should take some 5 or 6 years in total to finish. I just hope it won't take any longer than that for me. ;)

Well at least you don't have them bringing guns to school over there.
You will probably do alright with the kids because you don't seem the sort who will be as uptight as the average teacher. You'll probably be one that when you DO say something they'll know you mean business.
What university are you at?
Pakana
11-05-2001, 03:02 PM
>Well at least you don't have them bringing guns to school over there.
At least not yet. :/ And if they won't, I think I'll manage pretty fine. Respect my authorita!!!
But yeah, I'm at Helsinki university. Numerous students here and too little space, let alone supervision.

 yes SIR, Mr. Sorvali!
One of my friends goes to Helsinki university and told me that there's 100,000 students there. Now, unless there was some really huge annex about the size of Wembley stadium that I didn't see, that place looked in no way big enough for that many students. It is a very pretty building though. :)
aboriginaali
11-05-2001, 11:26 PM
Iīm not so sure about that 100,000 students, but the university is scattered around Helsinki so there is no need for a superlarge campus.
Pakana
11-06-2001, 03:36 PM
No, but the distances between the university buildings create problems too.
allissson
11-06-2001, 05:56 PM
Is it spread out over the whole of helsinki or just spread out in the general area of the main building?
Pakana
11-07-2001, 01:19 PM
Both. Most of the university is scattered within a radius of 1 km around the main building, but there are also 3 other "campus areas" out from the centre which are not particularly easy to access from everywhere + some separate buildings here and there. All this results in that before the math/science faculty will be wholly concentrated into the campus of Kumpula in 2003, I will have to travel between 3 quite different places just to study. :/ Luckily the public transport is decent.
allissson
11-07-2001, 06:34 PM
Surely not three places in one day, huh? That can get rough especially in the winter as you guys don't just get the token groundcover snow, you get SNOW there. Are your courses right now strictly maths or other things too? How many courses are you taking in this semester? Sorry if I appear nosy, I am just interested in what different people study and why. :)
Pakana
11-08-2001, 03:06 PM
Well, if I choose my courses carelessly, then yes I would have to travel between all the three locations in a day. Doesn't necessarily mean that I would do it, though. :) Math is my major, but I also study physics, computer shite and that silly stuff to-be teachers ought to learn (something like psychology but not quite... educational science?). I tend to choose between physics and cs each semester because they mean the worst of those different locations, and now it's physics. I started 5 courses this semester, I already passed one and I attempt of passing at least two more. ;)

11-08-2001, 10:51 PM
Psychology - excellent idea - one thing you'll definitely need too. ;)
Pakana
11-09-2001, 04:11 PM
Well, that shite is obligatory for all who wish to be approved teachers someday. I wouldn't mind reading all of it. :(

I think that intuition is the most valuable tool when dealing with people. If you ignore intuition you get burned every time. I took some pretty interesting psychology classes at university - one was called "Altered States of Consciousness" - I learned a lot of useful things on that course. ;)
Pakana
11-09-2001, 07:03 PM
Psychology is interesting, no doubt, and from time to time one learns some useful things on these classes, but as you said, intuition is the ability that matters. I mean, I would get away with a degree a year earlier without that stuff. ;)
allissson
11-09-2001, 08:38 PM
well, how much of it are they having you study? one or two courses is reasonable, but a year of it is a bit much don't you think?
Pakana
11-10-2001, 06:54 PM
I think it's some 13 courses of various lengths, and altogether it really takes about a year to pass them. Of course I won't study them in a row, that if anything would make anyone insane...
allissson
11-13-2001, 02:37 AM
it would be useful if hypnosis were one of those courses ;)
