seriously speaking, the interpretation that I like the most goes something like this: seven is the number for Good, innit? and three is the number for Perfection. so because six is less than seven, in other words less than Good, it must be Evil. ergo, three sixes is the Perfect Evil.

OK - I see where you are coming from with the number theory. That makes sense.

I know this 666 thing is from the bible and is supposed to be about some beast the christians conjured up that causes them to have their knickers in a twist and think that the end of the world is coming. Is this beast supposed to be satan? I can't comprehend why they would be frightened by something that doesn't even exist.

It's really confusing and when my son asked me what 666 meant I had to tell him that I wasn't really sure.

I see it used for such a variety of things and I always wondered what it really meant.

yup, that pretty much sums it up! no one really knows what the number is supposed to be about, but the Beast is a seven-headed dragon or somesuch that is to rise from a fiery lake, and so forth. (a statue of it was featured in the Omen movies.) so it's not Satan -- at least not in a strict sense. but none of it really matter, does it?

Someone has said that 666 originally meant emperor Nero who made very much "martyres" among the christians at that time and the christians couldn't speak about him directly. But the meaning of that number is some kind of evil, there's no doubt of that.
