I have a question for all you Finns in here.

It seems that the Northern parts of Finland is a genuine and appreciated part of you country, while the Northern regions of Sweden are considered total wastelands. We have no bigger cities here in the North of Sweden (my town of Luleå holds about 80.000 people) but in Finland I think towns like Oulu are quite big. And Rovaniemi has one of the highest concentrations of bars in Northern Europe. Why is this? And is it really like this at all? :) Something I have always thought about...

Might have something to do with the fact that the southern folks consider us living up here being either Finns or Laplanders. They don't seem to think we are "real" Swedes...hmmm, don't know...

beats me. we're less civilized than you, I'd wager.

BTW, consider this: www.ub.uit.no/northernlights/eng/myths02.htm (http://www.ub.uit.no/northernlights/eng/myths02.htm).

that's some fantastic tale as told by warped christians. Oh, it's true that the Lapps and Sami were feared as witches but they were just normal heathen people minding their own business who wouldn't buy into the christianity bullshit. And certainly not evil people. notice how all the tales involving this "satan" character are dated post-christianity. Many of the people executed in the Salem witch trials were Scandinavian immigrants.

Maybe it has something to do with Tourism and Santa Claus (cos everyone knows that santa is from finland!)
:)

>cos everyone knows that santa is from finland!

No, most of the American people do not seem to know that. They think that the guy lives on the north pole. Hey come on, there's no land on the north pole!! Ignorant bastards. ;)

Yep, Santa lives at Korvatunturi alright! Ville is correct...

We do have a Santa living here in Sweden as well. On the Luppio Mountain - located in the Torne River Valley (my childhood home)....but he's a damn fake! At least I think he is.... :)

SANTA LIVES!!! and he lives in the land of the thousand lakes! And that's that...

I'm surprised they don't think Santa is American, Santa being clearly worth making a big deal over.

It always cracks me up what people believed, like cold winds bringing evil, blah blah. Poor bastards, I would have hated to live in an age without science. I would have gone insane with so many ideas in my head. And at least nowadays we can say things out loud, or where I live you can. :|

"I'm surprised they don't think Santa is American"

 oh but they do apparently because I had to go break up a fight in my front garden when my son was 8. he and the kid across the street got into a huge argument (this was when they still both believed in Santa) about this very same thing and it came to blows. You see, I had arranged to have the real Santa send my son and 3 nieces letters from Lapland and Alex showed the letter to his friend, etc. you know what's real difficult to explain to a little kid - a black Santa at the mall. What is one supposed to say to that besides "THAT one is NOT from Finland".

Differences between Suomi and Ruotsi .............I know another one - VODKA.

I have this t-shirt that is so vitun funny. There's a reindeer drinking from a Finlandia bottle and pissing into an Absolut bottle at the same time.

All kidding aside, Finlandia is the only vodka I can drink neat - and the lime flavour........ :D

"I have this t-shirt that is so vitun funny. There's a reindeer drinking from a Finlandia bottle and pissing into an Absolut bottle at the same time."

Reminds me of the beer commercial, where a pint of Lapin Kulta is distinguished from fresh river water.

And kidding aside, Finlandia really must be the best vodka in the world. Although there still are many others I can drink neat. ;)

"Reminds me of the beer commercial, where a pint of Lapin Kulta is distinguished from fresh river water. "

 that gives me an idea......reindeer drinking from a sewer and pissing out Budwieser (of course in reality I would not let a little reindeer drink from a sewer)

Yeah, when I'm old, I'll also smoke cigars and sit in a fuc.king lounge all day, with a top hat on. And drink expensive vodka which only someone as bourgeois as Moonsorrow can afford. :p

Me, proletarian to the core, bourgeois?? Vodka might be expensive, but true pleasures are to be afforded. ;)

I bet you are doing all the things I mentioned in the previous message when nobody's looking. :D

Pakana

Umm, yeah.... but at least you need quite a deal of imagination in order to consider my living room a lounge. ;)

If you wear top hats, I must ask that do you also have walking sticks? With ivory knobs, perhaps?

allissson
03-06-2002, 05:37 PM
 how about a birchwood staff topped with a quartz crystal instead?

Laine
03-06-2002, 06:30 PM
Hmm, could be. But is such a folkish material as birchwood acceptable in the bourgeois circles?

allissson
03-06-2002, 07:25 PM
alright - Oak then!

Pakana
03-06-2002, 11:41 PM
Ok, now drop it. I don't even own a top hat. I don't need it, let alone a walking stick.

You wanna know about my political stand? I despise all that is bourgeois. :x And yes, you're lucky enough I will not become your teacher. :p

what would be the Finnish word for "bourgeois"?

Laine

"Porvari", adjective "porvarillinen".
