oh dear lord, this could take a while:

Start from what you can see on top of the table.

Monitor: Samsung 181T-Silver, 18.1" TFT
Speakers: Altec Lansing ACS621, Subwoofer+2 satellites
Keyboard: KeyTronic Lifetime Designer KT2001, black
Mouse: Logitech Mini Wheel (also have Microsoft Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer, but this is not in use, since I don't feel like fighting, to get it to work on Linux/FreeBSD)

Then the rest.
Miditower: Chieftec DX-01WD
PSU: Enermax 350W FCA (adjustable, quiet, cost more than the case  )

Motherboard: Abit TH-7II RAID
Processor: Intel P4 1800Mhz s478 Northwood
with Alpha PAL8942 heatsink and Papst 8412NGML fan (deadlike silence).
Memory: 512MB of Samsung PC800 RD-RAM
Hard drive(s): 2x Seagate Barracuda ATA IV 80.0 GB
DVD-player: Pioneer DVD-106S slot in
CD-RW: LG 32x/10x/40x "Super-Link"
Floppy: Sony MPF-920
Graphics card: 32MB Matrox G550 Millenium (Had Leadtek GeForce 4 ti4400 but the Linux thing and the fact that the image quality was shit made me change it to the trusty Matrox)
Soundcard: Creative Labs SB Audigy Platinum /w front panel and remote control.
Network card: 3Com 3C905C-TX-M Etherlink XL 10/100Mbit
Modem: what fucking modem, this is broadband time.
TV-card: Hauppauge WinTV PVR 250 /w remote control.

Other: some random fans, round IDE cables, sound dampening inside the case, other minor mods to make it as silent as possible.

Future plans:
Another monitor, just like the one I have now. A girl asked me today why I want another one, my reply was "so I will have 2 of course" :p

I will buy another case after I move and start building water cooling system into it, at that time I will also change my CD-RW and DVD-players into SCSI ones and with the 2 extra IDE slots I will get 4x120GB Samsung 5400rpm drives and place them inside SilentDrive cases, to make the whisper they make disappear too (at this time I will maybe get rid of the 2x80GB Seagates or maybe start building another comp with them).
I think that is all, what you mean I am a geek wannabe?

Just so there is nothing unclear, this is not bragging, I love working on this machine and I love talking about it too, ultimate silence is my goal and I am doing pretty good now, but it can be better. And of course I have an ugly beige box now, I have to get a black one to fit all the other black/silver stuff I have :)
Can never have too many toys, can never stop making this better :D

Get two and Matrox Parhelia, so you can do this: http://www.matrox.com/mga/3d_gaming/surrgame.cfm
...except that getting it to work in linux might be a challenge.

PS: Agree with Ormir, extremely nice kit. :notworthy:

Thanks :)

@VoG
I don't do much games, even less 3D shooters, mainly slow RPG types and maybe Operation Flashpoin, Ghost Recon types. There is no point paying the euros for Parhelia, even tho it seems to gettting better and yeah, getting it work on Linux might be a pain.

My comp is pretty shitty...

Pentium 3 500 MHZ
192mb ram
40x cd rom
32/16/8x cd writer
20gb hard drive
Rockwell PCI modem/sound card (I only use it as a sound card)
ATI Radeon 64mb DDR VIVO (double-data rate, video-in/video-out)
No idea what my ethernet card is but it's way faster than a modem.

HP pavilion M70 17" monitor
HP scanjet 5300C (scanner)
HP deskjet 932C (printer)
Microsoft intellimouse explorer (great mouse!)
JVC HA-G55 headphones

Salamahurjaa, check out Morrowind, you're comp should run it. If you ever liked AD&D (the real pen and paper one), you'll love this game so much... it puts games like Diablo and Baldur's Gate to shame for trying to be like D&D: this is how that kinda game should be. Even if you don't like D&D, you might love this game anyway, it's really impressive.

Just for a taste I'll tell you this: if someone pisses you off, you can kill them, steal their plates and food and whatever gold and stuff they have, sleep in their bed from any injuries you may have and then sell the stuff you took. And it's totally open-ended, there's never any place you -have- to go... I actually can't play other RPGS anymore (at least not yet), they're just too stupid now (of course Morrowind has a few stupid things in it too, like all games).

And if you check it out and see slowdown on your comp, remember my comp and think how bad it must run on mine! :) it only runs cause of my 64mb video card... (lots o' textures and shit in use at all times)

I have it, haven't played it too much yet tho, but I do like the way it looks, well, actually I haven't tried it since I got rid of my GeForce 4, I should maybe check out if it runs well with this card and then buy it, mine is a friends 'backup' that he forgot at my place ;)

Right now playing Dungeon Siege which is getting pretty boring at the moment, I wonder when they learn that RGP is not all about killing people with the biggest swords and spells you find *sigh*

I never really say much about my computer. Mainly I don't have much to brag about. About the only thing that is cool about mine is the soundsystem I have it hooked up to...

Anyway here's my Specs.

DeLL Dimension 4100 Custom (2001)
Processor: Intel PIII 866MHz
Memory: 256MB RAM
DVD/CD Rom: NEC DV-5700A 40x
CD-RW: Sony CRX140E 2/4/8x (32x Read)
Hardisk: Maxtor 80GB HD
Graphics: NVIDIA TNT2 Model 64 Pro 32MB (Total AGP 64MB)
Sound: Creative Labs SB Live!
NIC Card: SOHOWare 10/100Mbit Ethernet
Internet Connection: Broadband Cable
Video Capture Card: Pinnacle Systems DC1000
Other Drives: Sandisk Flash Card USB Drive for use with my Digital Camera (or anything else that uses flash cards)

OS: Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Mouse: Microsoft Intellimouse with the cool Wheel
Monitor: NEC MultiSync 75 "17
Keyboard: Standard MS Keyboard with stupid internet buttons I never use. I miss my shitty old HP's keyboard that at least let me adjust the volume...

Ok, now where my computer lags in "up to dateness" I make up a little bit for sound... heh.

Sound System:
2 Harman/Kardon HK20 Speakers that Came with it. Pretty loud for being stock
2 Pioneer CS-G404 Floor Standing Speakers. 15" Woofer, 6 1/2" Midrange 2 1/2" Tweeter. Maximum output 200 Watts
2 Sony SS-U3030 Bookshelf Speakers. 6 1/2" Woofer, 1 1/2 Tweeter. Maximum Output 50 Watts and those are on top of...
2 Pioneer CS-101 Floorstanding/Bookshelf Speakers. 10" Woofer, 2 1/2" Tweeter. Maximum Output 75 - 100 Watts (It says 75, but I replaced the woofers and have had them up to 100)
Amplifier: Technics Model SA-EX410 Dolby Pro-Logic reciever. 120 Watts Subwoofer Output.

What I want to do for the future?
I dunno. Part of me thinks I have a solid base to upgrade and build upon. Another part of me wants to start scraping up another $2,400 (What I paid for this with a monitor (not the NEC) and buy a new DeLL (or even a Micron). Another part of me wants to Scrape up the cash and hit the computer shows and buy the shit to buld one myself.

I dunno, yet. Ah well, I've geeked out enough.

Most of the parts are collected from here and there, free of course. Had to pay a little for the (broken, works only 800x600 resolution) monitor and some other stuff. I'm satisfied with this one, because i have no choice :D

When I arrived in Sweden, some 13 months ago, my computer was a Pentium 90Mhz, with 32MB of RAM, 850MB hard drive, 14" monitor, no sound card and only a floppy drive. I am pretty pleased with my new computer for a reason :)
I guess having a job helps.

@jhei
That comp is fine, you can pretty much do anything you need with that, hell I would have been happy to have 128MB ram in that P90 :D

BTW, I still have it, it's working as a server here, dividing the 512k ADSL connection for 3 computers.
I will most likely take parts from it when I start modifying my new case.

What OS/program you share/divide the ADSL? I need some advices end of next month cause we get ADSL with my girlfriend here. I dont wanna use fucking windows to share net. Now that coming router machine has LINUX MANDRAKE 7.0 (old, i know) I need some easy/good sharing programs to that.

*sigh* just as I was writing a reply, our fucking internet went down, the only times I have had to reboot the server too, only when fucking Telias PIECE OF SHIT connection decides to die, I hope I can get Bostream in Helsingborg when I move, I fucking hate Telia.

Anyway, BBIagent (http://www.bbiagent.net/) is what we use, boots from the floppy and then uses the RAM to run, so our server is silent, the only things connected to it right now are processor, RAM, floppy and graphics card. Don't even have a monitor connecter most times, since it's not needed for the server.

@Reno
you really have to do something to this reply box, I am running Mozilla 1.2b and the reply box is about 1" wide, a real pain in the ass to write anything and of course the font is way too small too, looks like 6 or something.

Edit: typoes, thanks to this 1" reply box.

Hey Salamurhaaja don't you have broadband where you live? I had a broadband connection before me and my fiancée split some weeks agoand moved apart. Now in my new place I have a sunet connection which is almost as fast. And also it only costs me 25 kr a month which has cut my internet cost with 250 kr. Good shit :D

Thanks, i'l will test that software later this year when the ADSL comes..

Yep, this Telias piece of shit ADSL, sucks shit, I have never seen an internet connection go down so often, not even dial-up.

Well, when I move to Helsingborg I will hopefully get Bostreams 2,5Mbit connection :D

Yep, it should be real easy to setup, just read the site, that is all you need, but remember, it acts as a router and a firewall, so some P2P programs don't like it, unless you fix it, which we haven't bothered to do of course ;)

Edit: There is also a Linux distro called ClarkConnect (http://www.clarkconnect.org/) which is supposed work real good too, it's a bit more complicated, but it also offers a lot more than BBIagent.
Of course you should also check LinuxISO (http://www.linuxiso.org/) and DistroWatch (http://www.distrowatch.com/) for other suitable distributions.

what cable do I need when I want to transfer files from one computer to another? is this possible in the first place, when the two computers are seperated from each other ( not running over one network but two single comps.)

a) Two network cards and a fitting cable....
b) CD-R-drive and a ton of cd-r's....

Or C) The easier & cheaper solution: Take the hard drive out of the first computer and put it into the another. Then just copy the files normally from a drive to another. Just make sure the master/slave jumpers on the drives are set right. "Cable select" setting should be easiest. Windows (I presume you're using Win) should find the new drive automatically. Should be pretty problem free, I've done it thousand times.

:notworthy thanks

erm..... what's this "master/slave jumpers " ? :o how can I identify them as such?

Voice of God
12-17-2002, 03:24 AM
Here's a pic of jumper.

http://support.ernestallen.com/images/jumpers.gif

Don't trust on the settings on the pic, I don't know what drive that is (just found the pic through google), there should be text on your hard drive that shows its settings. Then just set the other (the one you're moving to another machine) to slave by moving the shunt. When you're done, change it to master and put it back to it's original computer. Small forceps, toothpick or long nails help when you're dealing with the shunt.

:spin: hehe, I'm not alone
but 10x a day is tough :(

mine crashes when:
- I do too much scanning
- I have running winamp, icq, 2 graphic programs and d/l more than 4 bigger files (to fool around with them in the graphic programs) at the same time
- around midnight  dunno why that, but around 24:00 I can be sure I'm kicked offline and shortly after that the comp. crashes too :-|

Are you two running win98 or Me or something? I haven't had any BSOD's since I installed XP and had maybe two or three (in a year) with Win2000, and it was never because of windows. I usually run at least winamp, trillian, one or two p2p programs (that download several biiiig files) and a browser or a game. If I'm adding bands to librariusmetallicus or doing something for my webpage, then also Photoshop. No problems what so ever... maybe I'm just lucky.

Pahin Kaikista

I have weird resource problem on my machine...

First i have 256Mb PC133 memory and Win98SE

usually i have open

Trillian messenger program
IE 6.0
Mirc
Seti@Home
AVG Viruscanner
Microsoft Internet Share

but my resources are going very fast fucking low...one day i have to boot machine cause free resources was 25%!!!!!

7,62mm - windows sucks it all :D

opacity
12-17-2002, 09:19 AM
win98 :barf:
somethings wrong with the installed OS anyway, cos when booting, it always tells me that some obscure file is not to find, and I have to insert the win98 CD. I think I did that a million times, but nothing changed for the better ---
anyway, as soon as I have sorted some things out, I'm gonna change back to win XP (that was the original OS on the comp. but I had to put it off cos my old ISDN-software was not able to work on or with winXP. now that I have ADSL anyway, I will go back to winXP.
actually I'm thinking of trying out this RedHat OS too.

Can I run RedHat and winXp parallel to each other? or was that only possible with older window systems?

Voice of God
12-17-2002, 09:33 PM
Don't know about WinXP, but at least I had RedHat Linux (umm... 6.0. I think) and Win2000 on this computer at the same time.
I had no problems, but when the deal was that I used Red Hat for email, newsgroups, www, word processing and all the "useful" stuff and Win2000 for games and photoshop... it was just too much hopping between the OS's. I hated Open Office and so I started using Win2k for word processing too and then I just got too lazy to switch OS just to browse the web... so after three months I was mainly using Win2k and only visited RedHat to check my mail. Kind of useless for me, except for the experience.

And dear hell Mozilla & Netscape were SLOW in Red Hat. Opera was the only good choice for that system (Konqueror was fun, but it showed lot of pages wrong... :( )

PS: I just got back from watching The Two Towers btw.... It ruled.
